CCTV, Video Surveillance and Camera Systems for Business

Advances in CCTV technology are turning video surveillance into one of the most valuable loss prevention, safety/security and management tools available today. Retailers use CCTV camera systems to monitor for shoplifters and dishonest employees, compile recorded evidence against bogus accident claims and monitor merchandising displays in stores that may be hundreds of miles away. Manufacturers, governments, hospitals and universities use CCTV camera systems to identify visitors and employees, monitor hazardous work areas, thwart theft and ensure the security of their premises and parking facilities.

Security Applications for camera systems

  • Observe and record theft or violence by overtly monitoring retail floor space, office buildings, building perimeters, warehouses, loading docks and parking garages.
  • Monitor sensitive areas where infrequent activities occur (i.e. confidential records, safes, etc..)
  • Monitor point-of-sale exceptions (cash register voids, over-rings, etc..) reducing cashier theft.
  • Observe and record shoplifting activities.
  • Walk a beat" by programming a moving camera to pan, tilt, and zoom within a defined pattern.\
  • Perform covert surveillance (where legally applicable)
  • Integrate with access control systems to provide video of persons entering and leaving the premises

What you need to know...

There are many things to consider when designing a camera system. Cameras, placement, the view as seen by the camera, the monitor(s) to view the cameras, and the recording device for the system. Amherst Alarm will work with you to set up the system that best meets your needs.

The first thing you'll need to consider is the cameras. Cameras are black and white or color, however most color cameras switch to black and white after dark or when the lights in the room are turned off. This is to maintain good image quality in low light levels. If you need a camera to record in a low light area we recommend using a camera with a built-in infrared illuminator. Ask for a demonstration, you'll be amazed at the difference. The next camera type is; fixed or PTZ (pan, tilt, zoom). A fixed camera does not move and cannot be controlled in anyway. A PTZ camera will move left, right, up, down and zoom in and out. It can also be controlled by a control keyboard or by using software. PTZ cameras are usually set up to auto tour. That means they are programmed to automatically pan, tilt, and zoom to designated locations. You can mix and match cameras to suite your needs. Keep in mind what it is you are trying to view and record when selecting your cameras.

DVR - Digital Video Recorder

Viewing and recording of your cameras is done by a Digital Video Recorder or DVR. The DVR records all the cameras and is also used to playback recorded events. The DVR also acts as a multiplexor. This means you can record 12 cameras and during playback view all 12 or just one. In live mode you select which cameras to view.
